The word sneha means oil, love and tenderness, - that is, to lubricate the body with warmth, nourishment and care. Read here about oil and ghee for both external and internal use.
Oils and ghee (clarified butter) have a calming effect on the body, are strengthening and are especially good for women before - during - after menopause.
There are two forms of Snehana:
Bahya Snehana - external oiling
Abhyantara Snehana - internal oiling

Bahya Snehana - Methods of external oiling :
A thorough self-massage with oils softens and strengthens skin, muscles, bones, connective tissue, blood vessels and blood circulation.
Full body oiling
If you don't have much time, you can apply a thin layer of oil to semi-wet skin. Here, water mixes with oil and is absorbed quickly - so you can get on with your day.
If you have time for a self-indulgent treat, you can make this model:
1. Place a bowl of oil in a hot water bath so that the oil becomes lukewarm.
2. Apply plenty of the warm nourishing oil to dry skin - (possibly also on the face and hair)
3. Massage the body - possibly with the knuckles of your legs, thighs and buttocks
4. Let the oil penetrate and sit on the skin for 20-30 minutes.
Wear a bathrobe or other clothing that you are not afraid of getting oil on.
5. Relax while the oil is absorbed and, if desired, drink warm water with lemon, which supports the body's detox processes.
6. Finish with a bath.
If you have oiled your hair, apply shampoo before wetting your hair to get it completely clean.

Oil treatment for hair/scalp
Apply oil to your hair and scalp and sleep with it overnight. (cover your pillow with a towel) Wash it out the next morning. Apply shampoo to dry hair and rinse. Oiling your hair strengthens hair structure, adds shine and prevents headaches, hair loss.
Oil pulling
Gandusha - when you fill your mouth completely with coconut oil and hold it without moving it.
Kavala Graha - when you gurgle or “swish” the oil around in your mouth.
Keep the oil in your mouth for 5-20 minutes. Cheeks are oiled from the inside and prevent wrinkles. Over time, the oil removes discoloration and is said to be able to heal incipient cavities and cure incipient periodontitis, as coconut is antiseptic and antifungal.

Oiling the nostrils - Nasya
The nasal walls benefit from being lubricated with coconut oil (or ghee) daily as it prevents dry mucous membranes in the nose and prevents bacteria/viruses from entering the body.
Oils for the 3 doshas
Vata:
Fatty warming oils are good for Vata's dry and prematurely aging skin.
Sesame oil is fantastic, avocado oil and nut oil (possibly heated)
Scents that are soothing and warming:
orange, mandarin, rose, geranium and all wood oils.
Pitta:
Less greasy and cooling oils like coconut and sunflower seed oil are good for skin that may have redness, broken blood vessels and rashes.
Fragrances that are cooling and sweet:
sandalwood, gardenia, jasmine, violet, lotus, rose, jasmine, mint, lavender,
fennel and chamomile.
Kapha:
Warming and highly activating oils such as mustard and black cumin oils stimulate metabolism and overall flow in the body, both energetically and physically.
Scents that are spicy and warming:
cloves, camphor, cinnamon, eucalyptus, juniper and marjoram.
Abhyantara Snehana - internal oiling
Consuming ghee as part of the diet or in treatment/medicine (snehapana).
Purpose: to lubricate and loosen waste products - ama, stimulate digestion, and also prepare the body for cleansing (panchakarma). For internal use, ghee is best as it easily lubricates mucous membranes, connective tissue and cell membranes. Short-chain fatty acids nourish intestinal cells and strengthen the intestinal barrier and improve digestion.
Ghee consumed directly
Take 1-2 teaspoons of clarified butter (ghee) on an empty stomach in the morning.
Has an uplifting, nourishing and lubricating effect on the digestive system.
Ghee with herbs
Ghee can be infused with Ayurvedic herbs such as Triphala, Ashwagandha, or Brahmi .
Example: ½ teaspoon of Triphala ghee before bed for better digestion and detox.
With warm milk
1 teaspoon of ghee dissolved in a cup of warm milk.
Supports sleep, nourishment and strengthens tissues (rasas).
