There is nothing more healing and invigorating than water. And cold water in particular has a greater and more transformative effect on both body and soul than you might dream of.

For millennia, Ayurveda has recognized the cold bath as one of the most powerful daily rituals we can give ourselves. In the Kundalini Yoga tradition, it has a special name:

Ishnaan - the perfect bath. It is not just a hygienic practice. It should be seen as a healing ceremony.

However, always remember that if you are sick, tired and worn out, hot baths followed by self-abhyanga are

(massage) what Ayurveda recommends first and foremost.

What is Ishnaan?

Ishnaan literally means "the perfect bath" in Punjabi.

The Vedic scripture Kurma Purana describes morning bathing before sunrise as obligatory. The scriptures specifically emphasize that cold water cleanses the subtle body and removes the effects of sleep and dreams in a way that hot water cannot. Ayurveda shares this view about the body's ability to resist the "attack" of cold water - and that in that "resistance" - lies the healing.

According to Ayurveda, cold water below 15°C activates the 72,000 nerve pathways in the body and causes them to release energy to the organs and glands. The cold water massages the skin while the body fights back and sends warm blood to all capillaries, tissues and organs. This is not discomfort for the sake of discomfort - it is physiology in its purest form.

The physical benefits are almost incomprehensible

It can be hard to get started - even in the shower. But once it becomes a habit, you'll quickly notice the huge effect it has.

With a short cold shower every day, you give your body a deep detox and a powerful boost. Fat burning, strengthening the nervous system, gland activation, hormone balancing and appetite regulation - all of this happens within the first few minutes of exposure.

Mentally, you are refreshed for hours after a cold shower, and your energy levels are at their peak. Your aura, your self-confidence and your willpower are boosted in a way that is hard to describe in words - but easy to feel.

Detailed overview of benefits:

Fat burning

Cold water activates brown adipose tissue (BAT), which burns calories to produce heat.

Strengthening the nervous system

Cold water activates the sympathetic nervous system and over time strengthens the parasympathetic system's ability to down-regulate. It increases vagus nerve tone with regular exposure.

Gland activation

There is a short-term increase in noradrenaline (up to 300%) and adrenaline from the adrenal glands

Hormone balancing

Cold water briefly increases testosterone and noradrenaline. There are also studies that show an effect on cortisol regulation by daily cold water baths. The increase in noradrenaline can actually help with fatigue and depression briefly.

Appetite regulation

There is some evidence that cold water affects leptin and ghrelin (the hunger hormones) via brown adipose tissue, but research on this is still limited.

The lymphatic system

Cold water causes muscles to contract, helping the lymph to move. The lymphatic system has no pump and is dependent on movement and muscle pressure.

Blood circulation .

Cold water causes vasoconstriction followed by vasodilation, which over time strengthens the elasticity of blood vessels and blood flow.

Skin

Cold water reduces pore opening and reduces sebum production.

Mental/mood .

The noradrenaline increase of up to 300% and dopamine increases are well documented and explain the marked mood and energy effect.

Ayurveda also talks about the removal of ama waste products and toxic minerals that have accumulated in the body's tissues over time. The cold water helps the body get rid of these, as well as counteracting edema and fluid retention.

Ishnaan and your dosha constellation.

Cold baths work differently depending on your dosha constitution.

Pitta - fire and water - benefits most from cold water. It cools and balances the fire element, and gets Pitta people out of their heads and into their bodies. Cold baths are actually one of Ayurveda's classic Pitta therapies.

Kapha - earth and water - is kick-started by cold water. Kapha tends to be lethargic, have edema and poor circulation, and a cold morning bath is almost medicine for this. It's the perfect start for a "slow starter".

Vata - air and space - should consider it a little more. Ask yourself: does it nourish you, or does it exhaust you? If you are very thin or feel exhausted for a period of time, a warm and soothing bath may actually be better for you. In general, however, cold water strengthens the nervous system and blood circulation, both of which are central to Vata balance.

Ice swimming in lakes - and in the sea - is a completely different matter.

It requires enormous willpower and is not beneficial for all dosha constellations. Especially for people with the Vata / air element in their constellation, it can actually drain the body and harm digestion. A cold shower - short or long - on the other hand is good for most people and much easier to integrate as a daily habit.

How to get started

Start with your usual, nice hot shower and then finish under cold water.

Gradually increase the time - second by second, day by day. Optimal is 1-2 minutes.

Afterwards, massage yourself into a warm, nourishing oil.

In Ayurveda, sesame oil is good for everyone - it is warming, nourishing.

- and you'll be glad you did - afterwards... I promise!
