Haldi doodh is what this jewel of a health booster is called in India. It is packed with good properties for both the body and the mind. It contains nut milk, warming spices and fats that ground and nourish Vata and Pitta dosha, and it improves the digestive fire - Agni - in all three doshas. Drink one cup a day - preferably before bed.

Benefits of the drink:

1. Golden milk is packed with antioxidants, prevents stress in cells, strengthens skin structure, fights diseases and infections.

2. Lowers blood sugar and the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

3. Has anti-inflammatory effects and relieves sore joints.

4. Improves memory and brain function. Said to protect against Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

5. Turmeric contains curcumin which is believed to protect against cancer and also help reduce depression, mood swings, anxiety and worry.

6. Strengthens digestion and can improve symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis (inflammation of the colon)

If you use almond milk or cow's milk, you get a lot of calcium that strengthens bones.

7. Overall protects against infections, viruses and overall strengthens the immune system enormously.

Recipe (buy everything organic):

2.5 dl coconut milk

2.5 dl almond milk (preferably homemade)

1.5 teaspoons turmeric powder

1/4 teaspoon ginger powder

1 cinnamon stick or 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon powder

1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder

1 teaspoon coconut oil or ghee (strengthens Ojas so is especially good for Vata)

A little sprinkle of pepper

Cane sugar or honey as needed (especially good for Vata and Pitta dosha)

Heat both types of milk together in a saucepan and add all the spices.

If you only have one type of milk, you can easily make do with that.

Alternatively, regular milk can also be used.

Let it simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes. Stir regularly and whisk a little if there are any spice lumps. Pour the milk into a cup and add a little coconut oil/ghee if desired.

Drink this nourishing vitalizing drink both at bedtime or in the morning.
