Yoga Nidra means yogic sleep. Not because you sleep, because you're actually not allowed to!

You lie relaxed on your back and are guided to a total deep relaxation of the entire body,

and the trick is to stay awake. Your 5 senses are paused, but you are awake - you are aware.

We are going from Alpha to Beta!

The goal here is to hit what we call the Alpha brainwave frequency - this is where the magic happens!

Here you increase your imagination, memory, ability to visualize, learning, receptivity, inner awareness and creativity. This state is called the connection between body and mind.

In the waking state, we are in what is called the Beta state.

When you dive into the Alpha frequency through yoga nidra, you are in deep relaxation.

Your eyes are closed and you slip into a lovely light daydream or light meditation.

Here you recover, release stress right down to the cellular level and relax so deeply that the body's healing process is activated Big Time! A 30 minute session is said to be equivalent to 3-4 hours of sleep.

Challenges, stress and sadness.

If you are going through a period that requires extra of you, perhaps with stress, sadness and unrest, yoga nidra is a very healing and calming practice that can help you enormously. It can be difficult for some people to get a good sleep when going through these periods, and here yoga nidra is a game changer. The practice is very grounding and helps you to maintain focus and more overview no matter what you are going through. You get out of your head and into your body and can often see things and situations in a larger perspective after a session.

When

You can take a session in the morning if you don't feel rested, in the afternoon if you need renewed energy, or before bed to help you drift straight into sleep.

You can find guided Yoga Nidra sessions in many places online, including on Youtube and Itunes.

Some may suit you better than others - try them out!

Tamas / Tamo Guna

When we lie on our backs in deep relaxation, we cultivate the energy we call Tamo guna in the physical body. Tamo guna relates to stillness - stagnation - and should be understood as a solid foundation.

In this stagnation, we can charge ourselves.

We reset - relax - rebuild.
