Vedic recipe directly imported from my ashram in Rishikesh in North India.
Easy chutney that is both spicy and sweet and therefore really good for helping to digest your food. You can use it on flatbread, papadums, all Indian dishes and with cheese.
You will need:
250 g pitted dates
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon whole cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 tsp garam masala
2.50 dl water
Cook the pitted dates in 2.5 dl water over low heat, covered, for 30 minutes.
Add a little more water if it evaporates.
Then pour the dates and any excess water into a blender. Sauté the cumin seeds in the oil.
Pour all the spices into the blender with the dates and blend for 30 seconds. You can add a little lemon or lime if you think it's too sweet. If you think it's too thick, add a little more liquid.
This chutney is suitable for all 3 doshas as it is both sweet and warming at the same time.
You can also mix your own dosha spice mix (approx. 3 tsp) into the chutney instead of the ones in the recipe - see my blog post with "Dosha spice mix"
