The energy responsible for your health - your digestive fire. Here you will get tips on keeping your digestive fire up, optimizing it, caring for it and nurturing it so that you can maintain a healthy body full of energy and vitality.

One of the main principles of Ayurveda is that if you have a well-functioning strong agni, your body is able to absorb prana, life energy and nutrients from the food you consume. You radiate health and vitality, have lots of energy and beautiful skin. You are able to limit or completely avoid the formation of ama in your body, which are toxins/wastes. If your agni is weak or unstable, you do not digest your food properly. You may have stomach pain, bloating, an upset stomach and you accumulate what is called ama, which are toxins and waste. It can be seen, among other things, as deposits on your tongue and found throughout your digestive tract. If it is a constant condition, ama will slowly accumulate in tissues and according to Ayurveda, this is the beginning of disease.

You can think of your digestive process as a fireplace from which you want to get as much light and heat as possible. It needs to be lit and kept going.

Here you will find tips for optimizing and balancing your Agni.

1. Eat three meals a day, about four hours apart.

2. Drink the little agni elixir. It ignites the digestive fire.

3. Skip snacks as they interfere with the digestion of the food you already have in your system.

4. Chew your food until it is liquid - about 20 times.

5. Eat either warm food or at least room temperature food. Food and drinks that are either too hot or too cold will throw your agni out of balance.

6. Eat in a quiet environment where you can pay attention to your food.

7. Do not drink large amounts of water either before, during or after your meal. Maybe only 1-2 small sips if necessary. It is best to wait until an hour after eating and at least an hour before drinking, so that you do not dilute your digestive fire and wash away important enzymes.

Agni elixir.

You can use them to kickstart and shut down/balance your digestion!

Ignite agni - before meals:

Mix equal parts: lemon juice, ginger juice, water, and honey.

Drink 50 grams just before your meal.

Balance agni - after meals:

Mix equal parts roasted fennel seeds, cardamom seeds, cumin seeds, and a little maple syrup.

Chew a teaspoon after each meal. Relieves bloating and any unpleasant feeling of fullness.

Your Dosha Agni:

Vata usually has unstable digestion, and it is important to eat easily digestible food. Optimal is food that is slightly liquid and warm. Only soft juicy fruits. No raw vegetables.

Pitta usually has a good and strong digestion and can tolerate most things. But should avoid eating too spicy food as it can cause too much stomach acid. Drink something cool between meals.

Kapha has sluggish digestion and, like Vata, should eat warm and liquid foods. Avoid raw foods and drink warm things during the day to create a flow in the digestive tract that can stagnate.

Also strengthen your digestion with the dosha spice blends you can see on one of my other blog posts here!
